TITLE:  Adult Services/Young Adult Librarian

HOURS/DAYS:  Full-time, position-working 40 hours per week, combination of daytime and evening hours required.   Schedule will be determined based on the needs of the department.

DEADLINE:  Applications will be accepted until position is filled, but first consideration given to applications received by March 15, 2017.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  MLS from an ALA accredited required;  The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the public library’s role in the community and be knowledgeable about the current and future service and technology trends. Prior public library experience necessary.

JOB DESCRIPTION  

This position heads the  Adult Services/Young Adult Department, which is responsible for general reader’s service, and programming to adults and young adults.  Young adult service is loosely defined as those persons age 13 or older, recognizing that younger children use reference services also.

Duties include:

  • Provide reader’s advisory services and other desk services for all users.

  • Select YA materials

  • Provide assistance to customers using library equipment and computers.

  • Coordinate volunteer program.

  • Provide information services to general reading public, including reader’s advisory, displays, and special subject reference areas.

  • Coordinate programming for adults and young adults.

  • Prepare program statistics, reports, and other documents for department.

  • Prepare bibliographies, displays, and exhibits.

  • Aid and add input into adult and young adult collection development.

  • Act as liaison to Friends of the Library groups.

  • Maintain LDRL information calendar & publicize through a variety of means

  • E-reader trainer

  • Help promote library awareness and  programs

  • Perform special duties as assigned by Director.

  • Maintain reading groups

  • Strong community commitment

  • Facilitate social media as needed

  • Radio interviews to promote events.

  • Monthly programs to senior center.

Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Skills Required

  • MLS  degree and library experience

  • Strong reference/reader’s advisory skills

  • Working knowledge of computer applications for library services.

  • Working knowledge of using library equipment and assistive devices.

  • Ability to apply principles of library science to solve practical problems

  • Ability to comprehend patron needs quickly and accurately

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff and public

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to move and/or lift materials up to 25 pounds

  • Ability to push a loaded book truck weighing up to 300 pounds

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, reach, climb, balance, and sit

  • Ability to operate a keyboard at sufficient speed and typical office equipment, including computer hardware

  • Regularly required to talk and/or hear; use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms

  • Vision and hearing at or correctable to “normal ranges”

  • Occasionally required to attend off-site meetings.

Salary:  $35,000-$40,000 based on experience.  Excellent  health insurance, retirement and other benefits.
